Cynical...maybe..

My mom sent me this email tonight:
Insurance companies are making these decisions every day in the United States. If you have a pre- existing condition they will not insure you. If you start costing too much they refuse to renew your insurance. You have to get their permission to be treated for conditions in the emergency rooms and they raise your rates at their discresion. The way I see it , the insurance companies have the most to lose. They get paid no matter what. No wonder they are so against National Health Care. They are making a fortune! They are 100% against National Health care since they have the most to lose. Don't believe all their lies.
Here's my response:
The thing that we, "the younger generation" are questioning about "the health care debate", has nothing to do with cost or affordability. It has nothing to do with corporate vs. government. It has nothing to do with who makes the final decisions about whether we will ever get care or whether our children will eventually ever be able to afford it. It has nothing to do with Socialism or Freedom. Free market vs. Fascism . Democracy vs. Police State.
It has everything to do with trust. Trust that we as citizens must give to a government which has lied to us. Consistent immutable lies. About the wars our fathers, ourselves and our children are required to fight and die in. About taxes we are supposed to pay for those wars and other misadventures. About leaders for whom the laws don't seem to apply.
Trust. Nothing more.
You yourselves have taught us that the government is not a government of the people, by the people, for the people.
It turns out to be a government of some people, run by some people, for some people.
How do you expect us to react?
Should we believe that this same government is looking out for our best interests? That a low level government bureaucrat will somehow do better for us than a low level corporate bureaucrat? An Insurance underwriter vs. a Drivers License Clerk?
That there is more trust in one gang of thieves over another?
Why?
I hate to quote Regan because it somehow paints me as a Republican, which I'm not. He used the phrase "Hello I'm from the government and I'm here to help" as a laugh line in a speech.
Say that to a Katrina survivor. I bet they chuckle just a little bit.

Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, whatever you are, I think you hit the nail right on the head.
It's kind of sad if you think about it. It's one of those classic, damned if we did, damned if we don't kind of scenarios.
Whatever the case may be, after seeing how poorly the government is handling our children's education, well yeah, it all goes back to the lack of trust but it would help if they at least gave us a reason to trust them.

Too true. I've watched for years as individuals have been abused by the government and corporate power structures. One truth I see is the devil you know is usually better than the one you don't.
