Review of AMC's remake of 'The Prisoner'
There was an innate sense of paranoia that was part of the original series and it is missing from this attempt.
Once, where the confusion of the early episodes degraded into rapid fire free association as the series climaxed. This version attempts to answer questions that were left to the imagination of the viewer and I can't say that I like the direction that it has been taken. Plodding and slow to develop, this version attempts to tie the unanswered questions of the original up with a nice tidy bow.
In the original series 6 battled with an assortment of different number 2's, episode upon episode. In McGoohan's 'Prisoner', Number 1 never is really identified only alluded to even in the final episode where we are still left with the question whether 6 is number 1 or has he gone completely insane or died ....here they try to to inject a Utopian "There is no number 1" to resolve the question early on, quickly with no fuss. From the mouth of a child.
The target of manipulation and conspiracy, 6 rebelled against an adversary armed with vastly superior technology and tactics. While 6 is armed with his training as a covert agent he is constantly guarding against being tripped up. Ultimately possibly finding that he was the final word in controlling his own destiny. Insanity vs Reality. Paranoia or Truth.
6 is us as we struggle to cope with an increasingly intrusive technological society. I liked McGoohans perspective and I missed him here.
Be seeing you.

I agree Jim. I was really looking forward to seeing the new Prisoner. While there were some good aspects of the show, it really didn't hold up to the original. I wonder if it is because they only had a 6 hour window to tell the story. In any case, the McGoohan version is still tops!

Yeah, I think I'm gonna pull out the box set and popcorn and waste the next 3 days. :)
